Despite being only a ten-minute drive from downtown Portland, Overlook doesn’t feel urban at all. The neighborhood stretches between N. Ainsworth Street to the north, Interstate-5 to the east, N. Russell Street to the south, and the Willamette River to the west. It encompasses the economic thoroughfares of Interstate Ave. and Killingsworth St. while also maintaining a community of walkers and bike riders. With a MAX Yellow Line stop right in the heart of Overlook, getting into downtown Portland at rush hour is a breeze.
The neighborhoods bordering Overlook are a great place to visit too. University Park and Arbor Lodge are low-key places to poke around, or you could check out more of the upbeat offerings in Boise or Humboldt. Compared to the surrounding areas, Overlook feels cozy and quiet while still offering a lot to do.
Businesses Big and Small
There’s a whole slew of interesting local joints in Overlook, as well as a few big employers. You can find many restaurants clustered on Killingsworth Street and N. Interstate Avenue, two of the main commercial thoroughfares in Overlook. Start by grabbing a cup of joe at Blend Coffee, a laid-back Overlook staple since 2007. Or, if you like to start your day with a hot drink and a book, The Stacks Coffeehouse might be perfect for you. This combination coffee shop and community library boasts “fifty feet of 10-foot high bookshelves,” and you can even get a card to take a book home. Foxy Coffee on Interstate Avenue offers drinks in sleek, minimalist digs with tons of plants, so you can sip and relax while you wait for the MAX.
When lunchtime rolls around, you can find a wide variety of food offerings in the Overlook neighborhood. Spitz might not be a local chain, but it is a wildly popular one, with a nearly 5-star rating and healthy Mediterranean offerings. Satellite Tavern is a sports bar with a spacious outdoor patio and even a horseshoe pit so that you can have some fun and games with your burger and beer. Another popular option is Saraveza, specializing in Midwestern tavern food and craft beers. On the other side of the culinary spectrum, E’Njoni Cafe is a cozy Overlook joint offering Ethiopian and Eritrean food and a traditional coffee ceremony.
The wide variety of quality restaurants packed into Overlook’s modest square footage is a big part of what makes it such an appealing place to be. Of course, another big draw is the employment opportunities. The Adidas North American headquarters are located in Overlook, with the flagship store in the Montgomery Park Building. Whether it’s jobs or quality sneakers, Overlook can offer both.
A Neighborly Neighborhood
One great thing about Overlook is its strong community. The Overlook Neighborhood Association is regularly updated and thriving, providing tons of information to residents about local events and news. It also produces a regular publication called “Overlook Views” to share in-depth updates of community interest. Overlook takes pride in its appearance, with a designated hotline and email address to report graffiti as well as a monthly neighborhood cleanup.
A gem of the Overlook area is the Overlook House. The Ravens of Raven Creamery originally built this historic home, and the family later sold the house to the city for only a dollar. It’s now a thriving center for the community, serving as the Overlook Women’s Club headquarters. It’s also a popular venue for weddings or other private events.
A Place To Put Down Roots
Overlook’s demographic shows that it’s a great place to raise a family. One in four Overlook households has children under 18, with Beach Elementary School, Ockley Green School, and Jefferson High School all providing public education for local kids. Plus, there are tons of recreation options for adults and kids alike, since public parks compose four percent of Overlook’s land. Madrona Park offers a basketball court, playground, and walking paths, while Overlook Park is the place to go for baseball, soccer, softball, and volleyball, or to let your pup run around off-leash in the dog park. In addition, both Patton Square Park and Beach Community Garden offer spaces for neighbors to grow produce.
If water recreation is more your deal, you’ll be happy to know that Swan Island is part of Overlook’s neighborhood footprint. This industrial area contains an active recreation boat launch and port, with easy access to the Willamette for boating enthusiasts.
Housing In Overlook
Overlook shows that it is possible to have a small, close-knit neighborhood nestled in the middle of a busy city. With so many appealing elements, it’s unsurprising that Overlook is such a popular place to move. Real estate website Niche describes overlook as “one of the best places to live in Oregon,” and the housing can be accordingly pricey. Overlook’s median home value is $467,148, and the median rent is $1,470. Over half of Overlook residents own their homes. There’s a good variety of houses in the neighborhood, from new to old and small to large, but most are well-tended with attractive gardens. It’s a great place to walk around and admire your neighbor’s landscaping skills, especially since its walkability score is 72. These days, a small neighborhood with a dense suburban feel and quick connections to get farther into the city is an appealing prospect for many.
