Experience the Parkrose Neighborhood 

It’s hard to imagine today, but once upon a time, Parkrose was primarily farmland. Located at the northeastern edge of Portland, Parkrose did not become a part of the city until the growth of Sandy Boulevard reached into the district and brought with it commerce and easy accessibility to the city. Today Parkrose is dominated by two major freeways, I-84 and I-205, and Sandy Boulevard is still the main thoroughfare. 

The once quiet agricultural zone is now a densely populated industrial and residential area. While this may not be the place to go for swanky nightlife and hip restaurants, it is an excellent place for people who want a quiet and affordable place to live with easy access to all of Portland.

Historic Parkrose, Still Changing With The Times

Founded in 1911, Parkrose was a suburb dominated by farms. Today, all but one of those farms has transformed into an urban neighborhood. For 150 years and five generations, Rossi Farms has been the longest operating farm in the Pacific Northwest. Alfonzo Debenedetti purchased the 150-acre farm from the original homesteaders for $9,000 in gold. They no longer sell produce to the public, but the farm remains active as a venue for private events with proceeds benefiting Parkrose High School athletic programs.

Parkrose developed quickly in the 1920s and ’30s because of its proximity to Sandy Boulevard and the Columbia River. A place where houses were once separated by acres of farmland is now home to over 5,000 people. Parkrose is a diverse neighborhood with thriving schools and community activities like BIPOC Community Workshops, Taste of Parkrose, and the annual Trunk or Treat. Organizations like Historic Parkrose are committed to revitalizing Parkrose’s commercial and residential neighborhoods. Beneath the urban sprawl is the heart of a community, still adding to its history.

Getting Around Parkrose

Parkrose may feel a bit far away from the bustle of the city, but that distance is part of what makes for quiet and affordable living. The great part is how easy it is to get just about anywhere, whether you drive a car or take public transit. It takes about 18 minutes to drive downtown, and the TriMet’s Red Line, MAX Light rail, and Vancouver’s C-Tran all pass through the nearby transit center on Sandy Boulevard and NE 96th Ave.

Just because it’s so easy to get out of the neighborhood doesn’t mean there aren’t reasons to stick around also. Parkrose has some delicious places to eat that are off the beaten path. Try out the small family-owned restaurant, Fork and Spoon Food House, for authentic Filipino fare. Your eating adventures won’t be complete without a stop at Lily Market, a southeast Asian grocery store and deli where you can load up curries, salad rolls, and the unbeatable papaya salad.

If the weather cooperates, gather your picnic supplies and head over to Senn’s Dairy Park to enjoy your feast. This unique little park, located at 112th and Prescott, is in the location of the former Senn’s Dairy, which operated a drive-thru dairy where families could pick up items like milk and ice cream. The Parkrose community fought for this one-acre parcel of land, which was finally dedicated in 2009. The park is landscaped with native plants and has a thriving community garden.

No mention of  Parkrose would be complete without introducing The Grotto. Built atop Rocky Butte in 1924 as an outdoor Roman Catholic Sanctuary, The Grotto now hosts over 300,000 visitors of all faiths every year. There are 62-acres of lush gardens and tranquil paths to stroll through. The most popular time of year to visit is in December, during which the spectacular Christmas Festival of Lights occurs. It is a holiday treat not to be missed.

Living In Parkrose

 

The Parkrose neighborhood is bisected by Sandy Boulevard. To the north you will find convenient stores like IKEA, Home Depot, and Costco, not to mention plenty of hotels due to the proximity of the Portland International Airport.

South of Sandy is where the streets become more residential. Like lots of pockets in Portland, you’ll find a mix of newer and older homes, with plenty of hidden gems to discover. . The predominant housing styles are ranches and mid-century homes built in the 1950s to 1970s. The neighborhood is undergoing growth and improvements that will continue to add to the desirability of living here.

Real estate website Niche declares Parkrose to have 42% of residents renting homes with an average rental price of $1,250.
