Arbor Lodge is the Place to Be

There’s a reason the Arbor Lodge neighborhood is a popular choice for Portland residents. Arbor Lodge offers the best of both worlds, marrying the feeling of a cozy, close-knit community with the benefits of city life. This fast-growing neighborhood offers modern Portland living with a classic feel.

Nestled among other small yet bustling neighborhoods such as Kenton or Overlook, Arbor Lodge may appear to be just one of the many appealing areas in North Portland. But don’t start thinking Arbor Lodge is just one of many cute neighborhoods in the area–it’s truly one of a kind.

What’s it Like in Arbor Lodge?

As popular as this neighborhood is, many people are likely wondering what living there is really like. Many residents speak fondly of Arbor Lodge’s caring community and top-notch amenities. The neighborhood’s history stretches back to 1889, when Duff E. Sherman, a cashier for Oregon National Bank of Portland, submitted the Arbor Lodge plat. Interest in Arbor Lodge has exploded in the past decade, making this historic Portland neighborhood a hot spot for new growth. The neighborhood’s population sits at 11,490, with a lively mixture of singles, young families, and seniors with deep ties to the community and their neighbors. If you take a drive in the neighborhood, you shouldn’t be surprised to see dog walkers, cyclists, and maybe even a block party.

Arbor Lodge residents are lucky to have two major grocery stores in the neighborhood. Fred Meyer and New Seasons offer affordable or boutique grocery experiences, depending on your preferences. And if you’d rather stop by a restaurant than a grocery store, you won’t be disappointed either. Arbor Lodge has some excellent stops, from the legendary King Burrito with its affordable and delicious Mexican fare to the vibrant Tuk Tuk Thai restaurant. The Arbor Lodge is the neighborhood’s premier coffee shop, with a hyperlocal and organic focus that keeps you feeling good about your food. And lastly, the Mock Crest Tavern is a cozy space for small events and cold beer.

As for parks, families with children have options for playgrounds. Gammans City Park was a gift to the community from the wife of a Portland lawyer, offering six lots of grassy lawn, tall trees, picnic tables, and a play area. At over eight acres, the Arbor Lodge Park is more extensive and with a few more amenities, including an off-leash dog area and multiple sports fields. In addition to its local parks and restaurant scene, Arbor Lodge also boasts an active neighborhood association and even has a Montessori school.

Some people describe life in Arbor Lodge as akin to a “euro-urbanite lifestyle” with its emphasis on biking, small shops, and good coffee. It’s rare to have a neighborhood with so much to offer and so many people deeply invested in keeping their community great, which is probably why Arbor Lodge residents love living there.

Tucked Away Amidst the Bustle

Nestled in the heart of North Portland, Arbor lodge’s adjacent communities enhance its appeal. It lies just south of Kenton, whose downtown Denver street district offers several excellent bakeries, restaurants, and shops. A quick jaunt southeast gets any Arbor Lodge resident to the laid-back nightlife on Killingsworth street, where you might have a contemplative beer at the McMenamins Chapel Pub or a glass of bubbly at the underground champagne bar, Le Cave. Plus, the eclectic shops and food carts of Mississippi Avenue are just a five-minute car ride away.

If you’re looking for a bit more excitement, there’s plenty of ways to get to downtown Portland with no muss or fuss. The yellow and blue MAX lines service Arbor Lodge, so you don’t even have to worry about battling traffic or parking to catch a meal or museum downtown. If you prefer to drive, it’s just ten minutes to get to the Pearl District from one of the I-5 ramps nearby. Though having ramps to a major highway can be detrimental to the neighborhood, Arbor Lodge doesn’t suffer from that pitfall. The ramps to I-5 are located on the neighborhood’s outskirts, at a convenient distance for residents but just far enough away to avoid impacting the area’s livability. Overall, Arbor Lodge is a great jumping-off point to explore the rest of Portland with just minutes of travel time!
