Sherwood is a Picture-Perfect Paradise
On hearing the name “Sherwood,” the average person will likely think of a lush old-growth forest populated by merry men. But though it might not be as famous as the forest of the Robin Hood mythos, Sherwood, Oregon is a Tualatin Valley gem!
Nestled amidst the rolling fields of Oregon’s wine country, Sherwood fosters a cozy suburban vibe and a beautiful Old Town district with striking historical facades. Its charming atmosphere and excellent schools makes Sherwood perfect for families. The city limits span less than five square miles with a population of about 20,000. With its small population and proximity to Portland, Sherwood offers a lot to love in a compact package.
A Vibrant, Caring Community
Sherwood’s picturesque Old Town puts the city’s rich history on display. The community was platted in 1889 and shaped by the Klondike gold rush. Now the city’s historic buildings stand as a testament to its vibrant past. In terms of modern attractions, Sherwood has a lot to choose from. Stop by Symposium Coffee and Whiskey House for a sip of your beverage of choice, and enjoy the outdoor lounge chairs while you’re at it. If beer is more your style, grab a table at Clancy’s, an old brick Irish tavern serving traditional pub fare. Dessert fans rejoice: downtown Sherwood hosts crave-worthy sweet shops such as The Hungry Hero and Sesame Donuts. And if Sherwood’s quiet night-life is not what you’re looking for, Portland is always a quick jaunt away.
To get a feel for Sherwood as a town, look no farther than the awesome community resources it boasts. For one, Sherwood offers an impressive array of parks in its relatively small area. Lots of green spaces and playgrounds make this a great place to live for families with kids and canines.
Sherwood maintains a tight-knit and supportive community. Those with green thumbs can reserve a plot at the community garden. Sherwood structures its garden around fostering community pride, social networking, and stewardship. As both a wonderful source of lower-cost produce and a tool for community-building, the garden is a symbol of what Sherwood does best.
If your green thumb is on account of paint rather than plants, you’ll love Sherwood’s art scene. The Sherwood Center for the Arts showcases local creativity with tons of exciting exhibitions and events. Check out the rotating art galleries, sip through a Science on Tap, or catch a family matinee. But Sherwood doesn’t stop at providing an excellent platform for the local artists. The city also hosts a Cultural Arts Commission, to emphasize the role of arts in the community’s bright future.
Explore the Tualatin Valley
If you’re a fan of public transit, Sherwood has options. TriMet bus lines 93 and 97 service Sherwood, with 94 an express route straight to the heart of Portland — an excellent resource for commuters. If you’re looking to get around the county, additional bus routes connect Sherwood to Newberg, McMinnville, and other fantastic destinations in Oregon’s wine country.
Speaking of wine, Sherwood is your gateway to the Vineyard and Valley Tour Route. Set aside a day for a meandering drive through the rolling Oregon countryside, sampling wine and reclining in scenic vineyards as you go. Passing the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge just out of Sherwood, the route passes through the protected wetland and into a green spread of farmland.
As Oregon produces 90 percent of the nation’s hazelnuts, you can expect to see a large number of hazelnut orchards as you continue on your journey. Stop by a roadside produce stand to get a taste of Oregon’s agricultural bounty fresh from the fields. Depending on the season, you might also swing by a U-Pick farm to gather up a bucket of berries or plums to snack on throughout the day.
Continuing along the 57-mile Vineyard and Valley route, there are a number of local wineries awaiting your tasting pleasure. Be sure to sample the area’s famous pinot noirs. Whether your tastes run red, white, or something in between, you’ll have no trouble picking out an excellent bottle of wine.
