Maywood Park: A City Within a City
Located on the eastern edge of Rocky Butte, the City of Maywood Park feels like a friendly escape from greater Portland. And it is literally a city within a city. Maywood Park incorporated into their very own city in 1967 to protect their neighborhood from being run through by the development of I-205. Today, the City of Maywood Park continues to thrive as a small town with a big heart.
The name Maywood Park came as a suggestion from the mother of developer Arthur Taylor. The story goes that she was reminiscing one winter day about how the wooded subdivision looked best in the month of May. And the name stuck – a perfectly quaint image for a neighborhood that grew but never lost the original feeling of a community surrounded by towering trees.
A Forest Become a City
Access to Portland’s eastern edge became easier when Sandy Boulevard expanded into a four-lane highway. With the growth of Sandy Boulevard came the development of what was mostly farmland in the Parkrose district. Until 1926 the plot of land that is now Maywood Park mainly consisted of old-growth conifers tucked between Parkrose and Sandy Boulevard. When The Columbia Realty Company discovered the undeveloped swath of forest, it was purchased and became Maywood Park. The popular planning of Laurelhurst Park and Eastmoreland neighborhoods in southeast Portland inspired the area’s development. Growth was slow until the late 1930s, but the result was wide streets with charming Cape Cod and English-style homes located under a canopy of evergreen conifers.
In 1967 the residents of Maywood Park found out the development of a freeway was slated to cut right through the neighborhood. They banded together and incorporated Maywood Park as a city. Unfortunately, they were unable to stop the freeway from completely avoiding their neighborhood, but they did alter the freeway’s path so that the new freeway sacrificed only 82 homes. Another win in the deal was the inclusion of a noise abatement landscaped berm that successfully separated the neighborhood from the sights and sounds of the freeway. The City of Maywood Park has happily governed 300 homes and just under 1,000 residents since its incorporation.
Neighborhood Location
The city of Maywood Park is a cozy .17 square-mile piece of land nestled just south of the Columbia River, six miles east of Downtown Portland. I-205 borders it on the west and 102nd Avenue at the eastern end. Prescott Street is on the Northern border and Fremont Street to the south.
One of the great things about Maywood Park is that it feels like you are removed from the city within its tree-lined streets. However, the close location to multiple main roads and freeways provides instant access to the rest of Portland.
