Aloha is a Wonderful Community for Families
Aloha (pronounced “a-LOW-ah”) is an unincorporated community in the Tualatin Valley nestled between the cities of Beaverton and Hillsboro. Before 1912, the area was known as Wheeler Crossing but received its new name when the Aloha post office opened that same year. Aloha residents attempted to incorporate in 1984. However, the regional boundary commission determined the community lacked the resources to provide for its own services. Since then, Beaverton and Hillsboro have split the area’s municipal services. Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue provides fire and EMS services.
Even though it’s unincorporated, Aloha residents still benefit from all the conveniences of suburban living — making the area an attractive place to live. Located about 10 miles away from Downtown Portland, and near the intersection of Hwy. 26 and Hwy. 217, Aloha residents enjoy easy access to the local freeway system as well as public transportation.
The area has grown so fast that in 2014, it ranked number 10 on NerdWallet’s Cities on the Rise in Oregon. Aloha did well because it ranked high for a growing workforce population and the growth rate of its resident’s employment related to state averages. NerdWallet’s ranking placed Aloha just behind Portland and ahead of its neighbors Hillsboro and Beaverton.
Aloha Demographics
With a current population of just over 55,000 people, Aloha’s median household income is $77,000, placing it well above the national average. 69% of Aloha residents own their homes and see a median home value price of $314,060.
According to the most recent census data, married couples lived in nearly 60% of Aloha households, and almost 43% of households contained children under the age of 18. This data shows that Aloha is an attractive destination to raise a family.
Aloha Schools
Because Aloha is unincorporated, it doesn’t have a school system of its own. That means area students attend schools in either the Beaverton or Hillsboro school districts. Most students living east of 209th Ave. attend Beaverton School District Schools like Aloha High School, Meadow Park Middle School, and Cooper Mountain Elementary. Fewer students attend Hillsboro schools, but the ones that do attend Century High School, R.A. Brown Middles, and several different elementary schools.
Fortunately for most Aloha families, the Beaverton School District is among Oregon’s best. The neighborhood information website Niche ranked the Beaverton School District as the fifth-best in Oregon in 2020. So if you’re considering a move to Aloha and have school-age children, make sure your new home falls within the Beaverton School District Boundaries.
Aloha Community Amenities
Thanks to its proximity to Beaverton and Hillsboro, Aloha residents enjoy all the benefits of close-in suburban living. Shopping destinations like Washington Square, Cedar Hills Crossing, and the Streets of Tanasbourne offer quick access to national retailers and local favorites like Powell’s Books. Also, by being so close to Downtown Portland, Aloha residents benefit from some of the best dining, entertainment, and shopping options in the country.
There are plenty of local attractions worth visiting as well. The Reserve Vineyard and Golf Club offers world-class golfing, event hosting, and fine dining. Over the years, the club has played host to major professional golf tournaments and since 2002 has earned a four-and-half star rating in Golf Digest’s bi-annual “Best Places to Play” issue.
Aloha’s most famous resident may be Harvey the Giant Rabbit, located outside Harvey Marine boat repair shop alongside Tualatin Valley Highway. Named for the invisible rabbit in the Jimmy Stewart classic Harvey, this 27-foot tall giant rabbit has stood outside the repair shop since 1974. Over the decades, the rabbit has become a local landmark and noted roadside attraction.
